Title: The Impact of AI-Assisted Language Learning on English Proficiency Among Rural Indonesian Students: A Mixed-Methods Study
1. INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE
English proficiency remains a significant barrier to academic and economic mobility for Indonesian students, particularly those in rural areas. While urban students have access to private tutoring and language courses, rural students rely primarily on school-based instruction, which often suffers from teacher shortages and limited resources.
Recent advances in AI-powered language learning tools (e.g., Duolingo, ChatGPT-based tutors) offer a potential solution to this inequality. However, the effectiveness of these tools in low-resource, non-Western educational contexts remains understudied.
2. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
RQ1: To what extent does AI-assisted language learning improve English proficiency among rural Indonesian secondary school students compared to traditional instruction?
RQ2: What are the perceived barriers and facilitators to adopting AI-based language learning tools in rural Indonesian schools?
RQ3: How do socioeconomic factors moderate the effectiveness of AI-assisted learning?
3. METHODOLOGY
Design: Sequential explanatory mixed-methods (QUAN → qual)
Phase 1 (Quantitative): Randomized controlled trial with 600 students across 12 rural schools in East Java. Treatment group uses AI tutor app for 30 minutes daily over 6 months. Control group receives standard instruction. Pre/post-test using validated English proficiency assessment.
Phase 2 (Qualitative): Semi-structured interviews with 40 students, 20 teachers, and 10 parents. Thematic analysis using NVivo.
4. EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS
- First large-scale RCT of AI language learning in Indonesian rural context
- Evidence-based policy recommendations for Ministry of Education
- Open-source AI tutor model adapted for Bahasa Indonesia speakers
5. TIMELINE: 3 years (Year 1: Literature review + tool development, Year 2: Data collection, Year 3: Analysis + writing)
