BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION Indonesia and Japan share a critical geographical challenge: both nations are located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and are highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis. Japan's advanced earthquake detection technology (including JMA's early warning system) represents the global gold standard in disaster preparedness. As a graduate of Earthquake Engineering from Institut Teknologi Bandung, I have been involved in Indonesia's national disaster risk assessment program. However, I recognize that our current systems lack the real-time AI capabilities that Japan has pioneered. 3. STUDY PLAN (Year 1-2) Year 1: Foundation courses in Seismology, Machine Learning for Geophysics, and Japanese Language (intermediate). Begin literature review on existing AI-based seismic detection models. Year 2: Conduct primary research at the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo. Develop and test a prototype AI model using historical seismic data from both Japanese and Indonesian earthquake databases. 4. EXPECTED OUTCOMES - A journal publication in Nature Geoscience or similar Q1 journal - A working prototype of AI seismic analysis tool adapted for Indonesian geology - Technology transfer framework between Japanese and Indonesian seismological institutes 5. POST-GRADUATION PLAN Return to Indonesia to implement the developed technology at BMKG (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika). Establish a joint Japan-Indonesia research center for earthquake AI at ITB.
